Abstract:

A key qualitative feature of the unique authorial style in the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” is M.A. Sholokhov’s extensive use of regional and provincial words and expressions to convey the distinctive local color of the life of the Don Cossacks. In the manuscripts of the first books of the novel, the writer began explaining them, commenting in the first publications. During the preparation of the 1941 edition of “And Quiet Flows the Don”, this work was continued by editor Y.B. Lukin, who prepared a special “Glossary” explaining 152 terms. This monograph publishes a new “Glossary of Local Words and Collocations in the Novel ‘And Quiet Flows the Don’” by M.A. Sholokhov, which was prepared by E.A. Tyurina and V.V. Vasilev based on the found manuscripts and the first scholarly edition of the text of “And Quiet Flows the Don.” For more information about the Glossary of Local Words and Collocations in M.A. Sholokhov’s novel “And Quiet Flows the Don,” refer to the article by E.A. Tyurina “On Certain Features of the Ethnolinguistic Commentary in ‘And Quiet Flows the Don’ (Towards the Publication of the ‘Glossary of Local Words and Collocations in the Novel by M.A. Sholokhov And Quiet Flows the Don’)” in this collective work.
