Abstract:

The article, dedicated to the history of the first printed organ of the Sukhum diocese — the magazine “Employee of the Transcaucasian Mission” (1912–1916) — examines the publications of two authors: D.I. Gulia and K.D. Machavariani, outstanding educators of Abkhazia, authors and compilers of the “Abkhaz Alphabet”, who played a prominent role in the development of Abkhaz culture, science, and literature. The cultural and historical context of the publications is analyzed, their prerequisites, connection with joint educational works, and significance for their further creative path are revealed. The example of such publications as Gulia’s article “What Abkhazia Needs”, K. Machavariani’s “The Ancient Bedia Temple and Its Treasures”, “To the Attention of Sukhum Archaeologists”, “Towards the Restoration of Christian Monuments in the Sukhum Diocese” and “The Feast of the ‘Life-Giving Pillar’ in Mtskheta”, shows how influential the authors attracted by Bishop Andrey (Ukhtomsky) were, how strictly the stated program of the publication was observed, and how much it corresponded to the designated goals and objectives.

  • Keywords: Caucasus, Abkhazia, Bishop Andrey (Ukhtomsky), D.I. Gulia. K.D. Machavariani, “Employee of the Transcaucasian Mission”.
