Abstract:

The article presents the history of the Verkho-Kharkov Nikolaev second-class dormitory convent, founded by two brothers and sister Stepanov in memory of their parents. The biography of Abbess Emilia (known in the world as Elisaveta Stepanova), her stay in the Borisov Tikhvin hermitage, and the management of the Verkho-Kharkov monastery have been reconstructed. 6 letters from Abbess Emilia to the Right Reverend Innokenty are published, containing information about the monastery, the life of its founders and the abbess. Also included is the speech of the Right Reverend Veniamin (Platonov), Bishop of Sumy at the burial of Abbess Emilia on May 30, 1871. The second part of the article is devoted to the school for girls of clergy that existed at the Odessa St. Michael-Arkhangelsk Convent. It is shown that the monastery opened in May 1844 by Archbishop Gabriel (Rozanov) on the outskirts of Odessa at the parish church in the name of the Archangel Michael, erected by Count M.S. Vorontsov in honor of his heavenly patron, was originally conceived as a school with a “orphanage” institution. Letters to Archbishop Innokenty from Abbess Eusevia, Abbess Philareta (Schlippenbach), Abbess Tabitha (Schekhovskaya), school mentors E.K. Bogolyubova and E.P. Gordinskaya, as well as Bishop Joseph (Velichkovsky), are published.
