Abstract:

Based on archival materials, the article examines several episodes from the history of the relationship between the critic Yuly Isaevich Aykhenwald (1872–1928) and Vyacheslav Ivanov for two years — from 1907 to 1909. The facts that served as the reason for the letters of Aykhenwald to Ivanov being introduced into scientific circulation are revealed. The question is raised about possible intermediaries who facilitated this communication — Maksimilian Voloshin, Adelaida Gertsyk, Mikhail Gershenzon and Aleksandra Chebotarevskaya, who may have facilitated contacts between Aykhenwald and Fedor Sologub during the same period. The bibliographic descriptions of the mentioned books presented to each other are being clarified. The circle of persons appearing in the letters or associated with it is established (E.A. Varzhenevskaya, I.N. Rosenfeld, B. Rosenfeld-Chagall). Special attention is paid to the first “meeting” of Aykhenwald and Ivanov in the publishing project of the Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche in 1903, Aichenwald’s review of Lidia Zinovyeva-Annibal’s book “The Tragic Menagerie” (1907), as well as his Pushkin studies in connection with the critic's participation in the publication of the collected works of Aleksandr Pushkin, undertaken by Semen Vengerov, for whom Ivanov wrote a text about “Gypsies”. The appendix to the article contains a telegram, two letters and a note addressed to Ivanov by Aykhenwald (Manuscript Department of the Russian State Library. F. 109. 11. 11) and his review of the book by Zinovyeva- Annibal “The Tragic Menagerie” is being republished.
