Abstract:
The article presents the most complete biographical essay on Apollon Nikitich Vvedensky, head of the Sukhumi military department and founder of the Flora garden (later Sinop Park), formed from various rare sources. The emphasis is on Vvedensky’s administrative activities in developing Abkhazia, as well as his literary, academic and journalistic heritage as one of the best authors of the 19th century who wrote about the region. The article analyzes Vvedensky’s innovative article “Abkhazians (Azega). Regarding Mr. Dubrovin’s article ‘Essay on the Peoples of the Caucasus and the Peoples Inhabiting It’” with a critical review of the works of previous authors who wrote about Abkhazia, clearly demonstrating Vvedensky’s competence and good command of the material, which allowed him to reveal widespread omissions and erroneous conclusions regarding key issues of Abkhazia’s past, present and future. In particular, the work of one of the most famous official military historians of that time, N.F. Dubrovin, was subjected to a thorough critical analysis.
