Abstract:

The essay probes into particularities of Fielding’s play “Tom Thumb and The Tragedy of Tragedies”, his parody of Restoration tragedy; the latter was very popular with the theatregoers of the time. The essay shows how the heterogeneous stylistic elements of the play get united into a complete whole. Fielding seemed to believe that in order to truthfully capture a reality within a creative work, one has not to go against artistic conventionality, but to lean on it. There was just one problem left: to keep up this dynamic balance he achieved.

  • Keywords: “Tom Thumb and The Tragedy of Tragedies”, reality and art within a creative work.
