Abstract:

The volume is based on the reports of the International scientific conference Merezhkovskys’ Circle: On the Occasion of the 150th Anniversary of Z.N. Gippius, hosted in December 2019 by A.M. Gorky IWL RAS in cooperation with the Library-Museum “A.F. Losev House.” Over 30 researchers from Russia, the USA, France, Montenegro, Poland, Lithuania and Japan, specializing in literary history of the late 19th and early 20th century, have participated in the conference. The collection includes three thematic sections. The first one contains articles on the poetry of Z. Gippius, the second concerns her prose fiction and egodocumental works. The third section considers the personality and legacy of Z. Gippius in a broad cultural, religious, theological and sociopolitical context. The publication of unknown and forgotten works and letters by Z. Gippius gives particular value to the collection, and in the appendix is a significantly expanded description of the Merezhkovskys’ home library in Paris. Previously unknown materials are introduced.
