The paper discusses possible approaches to the problem of translating Malay traditional prose into Russian. As an example, seven texts translated by the paper’s author were considered. The translator notes the stylistic proximity of the five authorless narratives of the 14th–19th centuries, in which the “hikayat” type, inherent in storytelling, predominates. They are different in genre:stories of magic and adventure, a “framed” Persian-style romance, and a fictionalized chronicle. Two works of authorship — a didactic treatise for the rulers of the 17th century. and memoirs of the mid-19th century — are written using both the “hikayat” and the “kitab” styles, this last being characterized by monotony, verbosity, and excessive synonymy. The author of the paper speaks about the turns of speech she had used when translating these two texts. Summarizing her work experience, she offers an integrated approach to the translation of the written monuments of the Orient. This principle involves a translation, verified stylistically in accordance with the norms of the Russian literary tradition, and accompanied by a fundamental source study apparatus, glossary and commentary on the translation.

  • Keywords: Malay traditional prose, narrative, “hikayat” and “kitab” styles, synonymy, philological and literary translation.
