Abstract:
The article presents an overview of the existing English versions of Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground. All the translations use different strategies and language to convey the images and ideas of the novel. The translations are analyzed in the broader context of Dostoevsky’s reputation in Britain and the USA. The translators’ biographies, as well as introductions and afterwords included in the translations are also discussed in the article.
