Abstract:

The studies included in the collective monograph cover a wide range of issues related to the biography as well as intellectual, artistic and religious aspects of the Merezhkovskys’ activities. The monograph consists of two sections. The first one considers the distinguishing features of the poetics and themes of the Merezhkovskys’ works in their convergence and divergence from the experience of European predecessors and contemporaries, clarifying their cultural preferences, illuminating religious searchings and political predilections. The second section contains studies on the biography of the Merezhkovskys, which describe their circle of contacts and diverse interests, exposing everyday hardships and some personal traits. The “Publications” section reproduces archival materials and the bibliographic list of musical scores of Z.N. Gippius. The “Appendix” features materials regarding the perception of the personality and works of D.S. Merezhkovsky in France, further characterizing the Merezhkovskys’ personal contacts, their participation in Russian and French cultural life. The design of the monograph features rare photographs and caricatures.

Keywords: D.S. Merezhkovsky, Z.N. Gippius, D.V. Philosophov, biography, reception, historiosophy, bibliographic list of musical scores.
